sercSouth Eastern Regional College (SERC) is one of six regional Colleges delivering further and higher education in Northern Ireland. It was formed as a result of College mergers within Northern Ireland in 2007 which brought together the expertise and quality of the Institutes previously known as East Down, Lisburn and North Down & Ards.  With campuses at Ballynahinch, Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn, Newcastle and Newtownards as well as numerous Community Venues across County Down, the South Eastern Regional College is committed to excellence in education and learning opportunities to our local communities.  Social inclusion is a key strategic objective of the organisation as well as development of the whole person.  In the Community Development team there are 5 full time members of staff responsible for different geographical areas across the College.

Their purpose is to reach adults in the community who would not come to the College for various reasons such as fear of failure, poverty, a previous bad experience of education, apathy and distance to travel. SERC therefore seek to find ways to work in partnership with voluntary and community groups to reach out to these individuals. The College provides courses in venues that are accessible and which are typically at a low level to allow people to start with success easily. Currently the Community Development team are looking at innovative ways where they can reach out further to access and support adults facing exclusion.
